Sound Barrier
Introduction
The increase in the volume of road, rail and air traffic has resulted in noise becoming a serious environmental problem. In addressing this problem, sound barriers were introduced. However, the earlier forms of barrier were unsightly, brought little or no sound reduction and deteriorated both structurally and in their acoustic behaviour, in a relatively short period.
With the introduction of acrylic acoustic screening made by Lucite International (Perspex Clearview made in Europe or other brand names made in Asia), many of the above problems, especially that of visual intrusion has been solved. It's a well-proven material ideal for use in all situations where noise levels need to be contained.
Benefits of Lucite Acrylic Acoustic Screening
Shatterproof Treatment
Shatterproof acrylic acoustic screening has the general benefits of acrylic sheets and also the high impact strength and shatterproof properties that comes from the integration of nylon threads. It is recommended to be used in all situations where safety levels are highly requested.
Light in Weight
It's lighter than glass, allowing standard supporting structures to be used. This also makes the handling of the sheets on site both safer and easier.
Optical Clarity
It has a truly excellent light transmission ability – at >90% (for clear sheet), which is higher than glass. Other plastic materials (e.g. PC) have a lower light transmission ability, which may reduce further upon surface deterioration.
Ease of Fabrication
Its on-site cutting and handling are both considerably easier and safer than glass. Additionally, it can either be bent or shaped (heating needed).
Impact Performance
It is a rigid material with excellent impact performance whereas glass is subjected to breakage (e.g. due to vandalism) and it can fail totally upon impact.
Acoustic Behaviour
It is a sound reflecting, rather than sound absorbing, material and at a thickness of 15mm and 20mm, sound reductions in excess of 32 and 35 dB have been recorded. This performance can be still further improved by shaping panels to curve inwards at the top.
Superb Weathering
Such is the experience of using it in all manner of outdoor situations,Lucite International is pleased to provide a 10 year guarantee on all acoustic screening products. The relevant reports are available upon request.
Flammability
Although glass is non-combustible, it can crack and even break in a fire. However, Lucite grades do not break or ignite in a fire and this has been tested through the simulation of a roadside fire.
Bird Protection
It can be modified with applied patterns (e.g. printed dots or lines) or stripes, which will make the panels more visible to birds.
Availability of Lucite Acrylic Acoustic Screening

AccreditationsA list of the Perspex Clearview accreditations to ZTV-Lsw 88 may be found at the end of this document. Perspex Clearview was used by the 'Deutsche Bahn AG' for the installation ofsound walls along the railways. In addition, similar products made in Taiwan, which comply with the Plastics Industry Development Centre's requirements, have been recommended for use wherever continuous barriers are needed. The relevant reports are available upon request.
